Today, Tomorrow and Beyond: Issues Affecting Women as They Age-Social Security & Securing Your Future

The Joint Task Force on "Issues Affecting Women as They Age" of the Chicago Bar Association and Women's Bar Association of Illinois was pleased to announce its first annual symposium: “Today, Tomorrow and Beyond: Issues Affecting Women as They Age-Social Security & Securing Your Future” on October 9, 2002, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. The Symposium was designed to educate women and individuals who address issues of importance to women as they age regarding their rights under Social Security and to serve as a public policy forum to help women understand Social Security reform options and their impact on older women.

The Symposium began with an overview of the social security system, including how the benefit allocation could change under different systems and key issues in evaluating these systems. Then a second panel will focus specifically on the status of different groups of people reviewing Social Security issues related to each specific group. These groups include older widows, younger widows with dependent children, divorced women, women in domestic partnerships, disabled persons, and wives of disabled persons. Panelists include: Melissa Favreault, Research Associate, Urban Institute, Washington D.C.; Heidi Hartmann, President and CEO, Institute for Women's Policy Research, Washington D.C.; Kilolo Kijakazi, Senior Policy Analyst, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Washington D.C.; Evelyn Morton, Senior Legislative Representative, AARP, Washington D.C.; and Anna Rappaport, F.S.A., Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Chicago, Illinois.

The Symposium was sponsored by The Actuarial Foundation, AARP, Loyola Elder Law Initiative, Older Women's League of Illinois (OWL) and the Retirement Research Foundation.
