Middle School Math Competition
The Hardest Math Problem Student Contest
The Hardest Math Problem Student Contest is an annual competition presented by The Actuarial Foundation, the Institute of Competition Sciences and the New York Life Foundation that challenges students in grades 6-8 to solve multistep, grade-specific math problems with real-world situations and engaging characters. Fifth graders are also eligible to participate by reaching to a higher grade level!
Fostering Math Skills and a Love of Math
"My students compete in a variety of modeling and other math and science competitions, but the MTFC is quite unique in a couple of ways. First, it is the only competition that doesn't dictate the problem. Instead, it allows the student teams to develop their own problem to investigate. This is a unique and rich learning opportunity for them. Secondly, MTFC is the only competition which assigns the teams a professional mentor. This gives the team the kind of real time guidance they don't receive in other competitions."
