As we celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week, The Actuarial Foundation is honored to support teachers. For sixteen years, The Actuarial Foundation and Scholastic have worked together to develop real-world math resources that engage students in mathematical thinking, relate math to real-life and future careers, and introduce students to the actuarial profession. This partnership has produced Math Workshops, distinct, self-paced programs covering math topics from algebra to statistics. Each module presents real-life scenarios such as promoting a rock band, buying a new car, and designing a baseball stadium. Math Workshop modules are free, and many offer a digital component, giving teachers options to meet their students where they are in their learning. There are also pre- and post- tests available to monitor students’ progress.
In addition to the Math Workshop modules, the Hardest Math Problem is an annual contest that challenges students in grades 6–8 to solve multistep, grade-appropriate math problems with real-world situations and engaging characters. The contest invigorates students’ perceptions of math with fun, challenging story problems that combine math reasoning skills with writing.
We are grateful to Scholastic for their collaboration and proud to offer these exceptional resources to support the critical work of teachers. Thank you, teachers, for all that you do!
