The Society of Actuaries 2019 Matching Gift Campaign for The Actuarial Foundation’s Math Motivators Tutoring Program Raises More Than $125,000
September 4, 2019
Thanks to the generous support of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and its members, The Actuarial Foundation is pleased to announce more than $125,000 was raised for its Math Motivators tutoring program in 2019. Generous contributions from SOA members during this year’s Matching Gift Campaign, including a legacy gift by Joel Magyar, FSA, resulted in $62,994.34. With the SOA match, the total donation is $125,988.68.
This significant contribution comes on the heels of the 2018 Matching Gift Campaign, which raised nearly $129,000 for Math Motivators. In total, nearly $255,000 was raised during the past two years thanks to the philanthropy of the SOA and its members.
The Foundation is extremely grateful and excited to use these funds to bring its award-winning tutoring program to more deserving schools and communities across the country. Over the past few years, Math Motivators has grown from being in two cities to nine cities. The goal is to expand the program to at least 18 cities and help more than 1,500 middle school and high school students improve their math skills on an annual basis.
“I am proud to see our members step up and volunteer both their time and money to supporting this important program, focused on attracting qualified minorities into the actuarial profession,” says SOA President James M. Glickman, FSA, MAAA, CLU. “Likewise, I am just as proud of the SOA’s lead role in matching these donations and providing staff time and resources to encourage even more actuaries to volunteer as tutors in The Actuarial Foundation’s Math Motivators program.”
Donations from the Matching Gift Campaign also will be used to develop tutor training materials, give achievement-based awards and recognition to students, and provide the funding needed to administer the program—it costs approximately $25,000 to start a program in a new city.
“We are beyond grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received from the SOA and its members for the Math Motivators program. Your commitment has made it possible for the Foundation to expand Math Motivators and change the lives of students all over the country,” said Jason Leppin, Executive Director of The Actuarial Foundation.
