Behind the Scenes of Math Motivators: How Tutors Prepare to Make a Difference

When students walk into a Math Motivators session, they see friendly volunteers ready to help them tackle math challenges and build confidence. What they don’t always see is the preparation that happens behind the scenes to ensure every tutoring session is a success.

At The Actuarial Foundation, we believe that great tutoring starts long before a volunteer meets a student. Every new Math Motivators volunteer completes a comprehensive onboarding process designed to equip them with the tools, training, and support needed to create a positive learning experience. Volunteers begin by registering through our volunteer portal and completing a background check before participating in our New Tutor Onboarding Training. During this training, volunteers learn engagement strategies such as allowing students time to think through problems and checking for understanding throughout a session. The training also helps volunteers better understand some of the challenges and barriers students may face both inside and outside the classroom.

Once onboarding is complete, volunteers participate in a program orientation that covers everything from school logistics and classroom procedures to the curriculum they will be using. Whether tutors are supporting coursework or test preparation programs, they receive guidance on the materials and resources available to them. For many programs, volunteers receive lesson materials and step-by-step answer keys before each session, allowing them time to review and prepare. Programs that use online learning platforms, such as IXL, provide volunteers with training to navigate the tools confidently and effectively.

Returning volunteers receive support, too. While many are already familiar with the program structure, they are kept up to date on any changes to curriculum, school locations, schedules, or procedures. Depending on the program, they may attend an updated orientation or receive the latest information electronically before tutoring begins.

The result is a volunteer experience that is structured, supportive, and designed for success. Volunteers don’t have to create lesson plans or figure things out on their own; they simply bring their enthusiasm, patience, and willingness to help. We take care of the rest.

By the time a tutor sits down with a student, they’ve already invested time in learning how to support that student’s success. And while the preparation happens behind the scenes, its impact is felt in every question answered, every concept mastered, and every boost of confidence gained along the way.
