“This week, we hear from one of our exceptional STEM Stars mentors who support our students as they pursue their goal to become actuaries. Tyson exemplifies the dedication and passion we strive to share as we work to increase representation and inclusion in the actuarial profession, creating a brighter future filled with opportunities for all. A heartfelt thank you to Tyson and to State Farm for your generosity.

Could you describe a moment where you felt particularly proud of the progress your Star made with your help? Maybe a challenge you helped them overcome, or a fun milestone?

Brenden worked hard to be prepared for Actuarial Exam P, but unfortunately he was not successful on his first attempt. We talked through the tough feeling that comes with that. He decided to give it another shot and was successful! Witnessing his determination and growth, I was immensely proud of his pass. It was truly a rewarding milestone for both of us.

How has your experience as a mentor in the STEM Stars program influenced your own professional growth and development?

Through mentoring, I have honed my communication and interpersonal skills, as well as gained a deeper understanding of the experience of new college students entering the actuarial field. Additionally, mentoring has allowed me to reflect on my own experiences in my field as I support my mentee in their journey.

What advice would you give to aspiring mentors looking to make a meaningful impact within the program?

To aspiring mentors looking to make a meaningful impact within the program, my advice would be to approach each mentoring relationship with empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to support and empower your mentee. Take the time to understand their goals, strengths, and challenges, and tailor your guidance accordingly. Creating a safe and trusting environment where your mentee feels comfortable to ask questions and seek guidance is crucial for their growth and success.

In your opinion, what makes the STEM Stars Actuarial Scholars program meaningful for mentors and mentees?

The STEM Stars Actuarial Scholars program holds great meaning for both mentors and mentees. For mentors, it provides an opportunity to give back to the community and make a tangible impact on the lives of aspiring actuaries. Mentors can share their knowledge, experiences, and insights, and witness the growth and achievements of their mentees firsthand. For mentees, the program offers invaluable guidance, support, and access to a mentor who can provide career advice, academic assistance, and overall encouragement. The program fosters a sense of belonging, motivation, and confidence, enabling people who might not otherwise pursue actuarial science to be successful and fulfilled.
