Why I Give Back

As president of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), I am passionate about the actuarial profession. Being an actuary is both a challenging and rewarding career, and I know how incredibly lucky I am. Like many other actuaries, I want to give back and support the next generation through the inspiring work of The Actuarial Foundation.
The CAS recognizes the positive impact The Actuarial Foundation’s programs are making in the math education and financial literacy spaces. In particular, the Math Motivators Tutoring Program and the Underserved Engagement Initiative (UEI) of the Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC) intentionally and strategically support low-income communities who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC). In line with the CAS’ commitment to diversity, these Foundation programs are working to provide equitable access to high-quality math education and address key barriers to entry in the actuarial profession.
This summer, the CAS is donating $40,000 to The Actuarial Foundation and challenging members to give an additional $10,000 to help grow these two important programs through the CAS Community Counts Challenge. Join me and give back!
Last year I was a judge of the Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC). The students were incredible and I saw firsthand how life-changing this high school math competition can be. The MTFC helps educators inspire and motivate students to learn how they can solve real-world problems with math. Students are exposed to actuarial science, consult with actuaries and dive into emerging issues.
This year, for the first time, the MTFC is being brought to teachers and students in low-income schools to get them excited about the possibilities of math and introduce them to the actuarial process. I can’t wait to see how increasing the access of BIPOC students to this kind of opportunity can help garner their enthusiasm about a future in the actuarial profession.
Come together with your CAS community and join the movement of CAS members who are creating possibilities for math teachers and students in underserved schools. The CAS Community Counts Challenge runs through Sept. 1, 2021. Make your donation now!
